Michael R. Garner, 60, of Carlyle died Monday August 24, 2009 at Belleville Memorial Hospital. He was born January 9, 1949 in Grand Prairie, Texas to Jerrel and Carrie (Turner) Garner. He married Hisako Kim August 29, 1981 in Yukosako, Japan.Mr. Garner was preceded in death by his parents, his step father: Richard Brink; grandparents: Victor and Sadie Turner, Tracey and Rose Garner; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Unkaku and Haruka Kim.Michael is survived by his wife Hisako; two sisters: Carolyn Wuebbles of Carlyle, and Linda Garner of Carlyle; four brothers: Jerrel Garner and wife Pam of Carlyle, Stanley Garner of Beckemeyer, Johnny Brink and wife Carol of Lufkin, Texas and Mark Brink of Champaign.Mike served in the United States Navy from April 1968 through February 1991. He was stationed out of San Diego, CA. Boarded on USS Walke, Pearl Harbor, USS Claude Jones, USS Buchanan, USS Kirk, USS Francis Hammond, USS Whipple and the USS Griddley all destroyers. He was a Vietnam veteran and Gulf War Veteran. He finished his tour of duty recruiting. All who knew and loved Mike knew that he enlisted in the Navy after graduating out of Breese High School. He served his country from 1968 until the day he died. He continually talked about the navy, his wife and her great cooking. When he moved back to Carlyle we got to know Mike again. His family here in Carlyle, friends, and his neighbors will miss him but always remember him. Mike loved to talk.In keeping with Mike’s wishes he was cremated. He will be buried at sea by the United States Navy in the Pacific Ocean off Pearl Harbor.There will be a Celebration of Life Service held at the Frerker Funeral Home at 2:00 pm Sunday August 30, 2009.Friends may visit with the family on August 30, 2009 from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at the Frerker Funeral Home.
