Robert F. Rainey of Carlyle died Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at the Carlyle Healthcare Center at the age of 79 years. Bob was born in Mt. Vernon, Illinois son January 1, 1935, the son of Homer M. and Lillian H. (Howe) Rainey. On August 14, 1954 in Mt. Vernon Bob married Shirley Keller, and Shirley survives in Carlyle.

Bob is also survived by his children: Edward Rainey and wife Patty of Keyesport, Michael Rainey of Carlyle, Bob Rainey and wife Sallie of DeWitt, Iowa, and Francie Voss and husband Randy of Carlyle; grandchildren: April Rainey and fiancé` Jerod Stinnett, Amanda Rainey, Angie Grayling, Jonathon Rainey, Jordan Rainey, Lindsey Baldridge and husband Ben, Sarah Rainey, Brad Voss and wife Shanowa, Justin Voss and wife Chelsie, Kristen Edler and husband Josh and Alex Voss; 12great grandchildren; and brothers: Floyd Rainey and Charles Rainey and wife Minta; sister-in-law: Betty Rainey; and brother-in-law: Sam Kirk.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Edward A. Rainey; sisters: Lois Fox and Elva Dean Suerstedt; brothers-in-law: K. Le`Moyne Fox and Richard Smart; sisters-in-law: Johnetta Smart, Mary Lou Kirk and Mary Lou Rainey; and great granddaughters: Anna and Kate Edler.

Bob worked from 1952 to 1958 as a "roughneck" on oil rigs in southern Illinois. In 1958 he graduated from the Illinois State Police Academy and worked from 1958 to 1985 as an Illinois State Trooper. In 1964 he was 1 of 8 Sharp Shooters on the Illinois State Police Pistol Team and won over 40 trophies. After his retirement from the Illinois State Police, Bob worked for Country Companies as a Crop Hail Adjuster for approximately 25 years. Prior to having health issues, Bob enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and wintering in the warm south, and enjoying life with his family- his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He particularly was fond of watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in extra curricular events.

Bob was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Retired State Police Association of Illinois. He was also one of the founders of the 4 O’clock Coffee Club.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle with Rev. Keith Michaels officiating. The interment services will be private..

Friends may visit with the family at the First United Methodist Church in Carlyle on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 9:00 A.M. until the time of services.

For those wishing to honor Bob with a memorial, the family suggests memorials to the First United Methodist Church Mission Fund, the Matthew 25 Food Pantry or to the charity of the donor’s choice and those will be received at the Frerker Funeral Home which is serving the family.
