Leonard J. Kampwerth of Carlyle died Tuesday October 13, 2009 at the Carlyle Healthcare Center at the age of 86 years. He was born in Wade Township/Clinton County on March 23, 1923 the son of Herman and Anna (Voss) Kampwerth. He married Dorothy Haas on May 17, 1949 in Mascoutah, Illinois and she preceded him in death on November 27, 2006.Leonard is survived by his mother: Anna Kampwerth of Carlyle; a daughter: Geralyn 'Gerry' Steinkamp of Carlyle; a son: Craig Kampwerth and wife Glenda of Canton, Illinois; three sisters: Alice Kerkemeyer and husband Leo of Collinsville, Dolores 'Dodie' Blum and husband Fred of San Antonio, Texas and Sr. Annemarie Kampwerth P.H.J.C. of Gary, Indiana; grandchildren: Melanie Becker and husband Mike of Carlyle, Eric Steinkamp and wife Jennifer of Bartelso and Adam Kampwerth of Canton; a step grandchild: Alex Hossler of Canton; and four great grandchildren: Andrew and Nicholas Becker of Carlyle, Kaitlyn Marie and Abigail Steinkamp of Bartelso.Mr. Kampwerth was preceded in death by his father, wife, sister: Evelyn Kampwerth; and a brother: Maurice Kampwerth.Mr. Kampwerth was a member of St. Mary Church in Carlyle. He had served in the Army during WWII and retired as a sales representative from Belknap Hardware Company in Louisville, Kentucky. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1382 of Carlyle, the Bishop Althoff Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus (having served as the Faithful Navigator), and the American Legion Post 252 of Breese.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church in Carlyle on Friday at 11:00 A.M. with Fr. George Mauck and Fr. Chuck Tuttle officiating. The interment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.Friends may visit with the family at the Frerker Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 8:00 P.M. or on Friday from 8 to 10:30 A.M.
