Gary L "Butch" Gehrs
February 12, 1946 — August 28, 2011
Gary L."Butch" Gehrs was born on February 12, 1946 in Breese, IL. He was the son of Fred and Marie (Holzhauer) Gehrs. Gary was a1964 graduate of Mater Dei High School and a 1969 graduate of McKendree University in Lebanon. He was employed as a teacher for St. Cecilia Grade School in Bartelso where he taught 6th grade. Mr. Gehrs enjoyed playing pinochle and watching the St. Louis Cardinals. He served as the financial secretary for the Bartelso Knights of Columbus, a Santa Fe Township Trustee. He enjoyed life to the fullest and always had a smile on his face.
Gary L. Gehrs passed away Sunday August 28, 2011 at his residence in Bartelso, Mr. Gehrs was 65 years of age.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law Kris Gehrs; a brother-in-law Martin Hayden; and a niece Christie Ann Gehrs.
Mr. Gehrs is survived by a sister; Patty Hayden of Salem; four brothers: Gale Gehrs and wife Gwen of Beckemeyer, Norman Gehrs of Boulder, NV, Fred Gehrs and wife Donna of Beckemeyer, and Mike Gehrs of Carlyle. Nieces and Nephews; Ronda Bierman and husband Danny, Tona Holle and husband Wayne both of Carlyle, Jim Gehrs and wife Angela of Pace, NY, Wayne Gehrs and special friend Angie of Breese, IL, Lisa Gurley and husband Mike of Carlyle, Kelly Gehrs and fiancé Seth Engstrom of Brooklyn, NY, Robert Gehrs and wife Rachel of Willoughby, OH, John Braden of Star City, AK, Isabel Willis of Terre Haute IN, Donna Marie Gehrs and fiancé Scott Holthaus of Breese, Vickie Gehrs of Beckemeyer, and Taylor Hayden of Salem. Special niece and caretaker Melony Gehrs and special friend Darrin Beer of Bartelso and many great nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday August 31, 2011 at St. Cecilia Church in Bartelso with Fr. Henry Fischer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Cecilia Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the Gehrs’ family from 5 until 8pm on Tuesday August 30, 2011 at the Frerker Funeral Home in Carlyle and on Wednesday from 9 until 10 am at St. Cecilia Church.
Memorials are suggested to the Bartelso Knights of Columbus and will be accepted at Frerker
